Santiago. The smoke from the landfill where the town halls of the municipalities of Villa Bisonó (Navarrete) and Villa González deposit it has been affecting the residents of the Estancia del Yaque community for almost a month.
Although with less intensity, the smoke continues to cause respiratory problems in families in the area, without the municipal authorities or the central government giving an answer to the serious problem. The dump is located in the Las Lavas community.
“We are tired of seeing that there is no solution while the smoke forces many people, mostly children and the elderly, to be admitted to health centers for respiratory problems,” said Dominga Marte, a resident of the area. Earlier this month, community organizations protested with a march to demand a definitive solution to the problem generated by the smoke from the dump.
They denounce that the students of the Gloria Beato educational center are affected by the smoke that emerges from the garbage dump, and this forces them to have to dispatch and lose teaching on a regular basis. As for the Jarabacoa landfill, after more than a week of smoke, the authorities managed to control the problem on Monday afternoon.
Last week the Council of Councilors of the Jarabacoa City Council declared that municipality in a state of emergency due to the dense smoke and the negative effects left by the fire. Mayor Yunior Torres asked the President of the Republic Luis Abinader for technical assistance to mitigate the impact of the flames in his community.
Another of the dumps that continue without controlling the smoke is that of the Los Guandules community, where the municipalities of the municipal districts of La Canela and Hato del Yaque in Santiago deposit. While for the one in Sosúa, in Puerto Plata, the residents have demanded the definitive closure from the environmental authorities, due to contamination.
