“These are the first reversals in the history of environmental institutions and are due to the seriousness of the cases, they are the first cases of salmon farms that overproduce and generate environmental damage in a protected area that is also a national park,” he said in conversation with Pulse.
What the SMA denounced is a damage that occurs in the water column and on the seabed, where the fattening centers operate in the open sea, due to overloading the place with a large number of fish than it was allowed to have. In this sense, Nova Austral -of Norwegian capitals- increased its production by up to 35%, which generated a greater quantity of fish, and in turn an exponential increase in its feces and food.
“In all three cases, we found that the seabed was azoic, that is, there is no life in the place and, therefore, the overproduction that affects the water column and the seabed, leaving it in this state,” he explained. .
“There are three sanctioning procedures, where the process is closed and the infractions were attributed to Nova Austral. We filed charges against Nova Austral accusing them of overproduction, they were able to defend themselves and today with this resolution the processes are closed. With this decision the company In addition, the Environmental Court of Valdivia has to resolve the consultation of these sanctions and has to authorize them and with that the centers leave the place and can never operate again in the national park, “he concluded.
