Sky announced its decision to close the Lima-Cancún route, due to the entry into force of the application of the connection fee (Unified Transfer Airport Use Fee – TUUA). A similar decision was made Latam with the cancellation of the Lima Havana route.
He stated that Cancun has historically been a key destination within Sky’s international network. However, external factors, such as the visa requirement for Peruvian passengers, significantly affected direct demand, which increased the proportion of connecting travelers. He added that, with the recent application of the TUUA, the profitability of the route has been affected, given that an important part of its traffic corresponds to passengers in transit.
“The decision is made in a challenging context for the airline industry,” the company said in a statement, adding that the route to be canceled has been in operation for four years and has transported more than 427,000 passengers.
Sky explained that it was necessary to adopt this measure to safeguard the sustainability and financial health of its operation, in line with its commitment to providing a safe, reliable, sustainable and competitive service.
“The application of the TUUA represents an increase in operating and tariff costs, creating a disadvantage compared to other airports in the region that do not apply this charge and which, therefore, are more attractive for international traffic,” he commented.
The route will remain operational normally until March 10, 2026. From that date, flights will be made three times a week – on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays – until its final closure on March 31, 2026.
