Six out of ten young people have some predisposition to emigrate if the opportunity arises, according to a Cifra survey released on Telemundo. Among those who would “certainly” leave and those who “probably” would add up to 61% of people up to 29 years of age, according to the study.

This percentage decreases as age advances and reaches 17% among those over 60 years of age.

Globally, 41% of Uruguayans have some predisposition to emigrate, according to the Cifra survey. That number is double compared to ten years ago when the economic cycle was going through its best years. The record was prior to the 2002 crisis with 44%.

There are no differences between people from the interior and from the capital when it comes to the answers for this survey. Madrid and the United States are the favorite destinations for those who are willing to leave the country.

Although these destinations remain in the same order, the preference for Spain is increasing and more than half (56%) of those who would think of leaving choose the European destination. In 2007 they were 42%.

The work was a national telephone survey (to landlines and cell phones) of CIFRA throughout the country: 806 interviewees between May 17 and 25, 2022.
