On the sidelines of the Mercosur summit, six countries signed an agreement where they expressed their “deep concern about the serious migratory, humanitarian and social crisis in Venezuela.”
Argentina, Paraguay, Panama, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru signed this Saturday, on the sidelines of the Mercosur summit, a declaration ratifying their desire for the democratic order to be restored in Venezuela “by peaceful means” and to guarantee “unrestricted respect for human rights.”

This group of countries expressed their “deep concern about the serious migratory, humanitarian and social crisis in Venezuela” and urged the administration of Nicolás Maduro to immediately release and guarantee due process, as well as the physical integrity, of all citizens “arbitrarily deprived of their freedom.”
They also warned about the persistence of arbitrary detentions and forced disappearances, an issue that has been denounced by various international organizations.
The statement makes no reference to the United States or the military deployment in the Caribbean and Western Pacific. It is also more moderate than the position defended by Milei during the summit, who welcomed the military pressure aimed at “liberating the Venezuelan people” and urged his partners in the South American bloc to do the same.

On the other hand, the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stated that a possible military intervention in Venezuela it would be a catastrophe and it would create a serious precedent for all of South America.

As there was no agreement on these points, the Venezuelan paragraph was excluded from the Mercosur declaration and the other six countries chose to publish their own text.
