Signatories such as Gustavo Gorriti, Raúl Tola and Marco Sifuentes criticize the inaction of this organization in the face of the growing degradation of democracy and misinformation.
In a letter that shocked the journalistic union, six renowned journalists and columnists announced their resignation as associate members of the Press and Society Institute (IPYS), in protest at what they consider to be an inconsistency of the institution with the principles of journalism and the defense of democracy. The signatories of this letter would be Gustavo Gorriti, Edmundo Cruz, Diego García Sayán, Marco Sifuentes, Oscar Libón and Raúl Tola, figures with extensive experience in the country and the region.
In the letter, the journalists expressed their discomfort with the IPYS leadership, pointing out that its attitude is in “evident dissonance” with the values that the organization should represent. “In recent years, the growing degradation of democracy in the country has meant, among other things, the intensification of attacks, through defamatory disinformation campaigns, against journalists by political networks linked to corruption, authoritarianism and crime. organized”, they emphasize in the document.

The signatories accuse the IPYS management of not rising to the occasion, arguing that the institution has not assumed a forceful role in the defense of freedom of expression and the protection of journalists against the attacks of power. Faced with this situation, they demanded the removal of their names and photos from the institute’s website, as a sign of their definitive disassociation.
The resignation of figures such as Gorriti, Cruz, Sayán, Sifuentes, Libón and Tola raises questions about the future of IPYS and its credibility in defending the rights of journalists. Furthermore, it reflects the disenchantment and concern of important sectors of journalism with the future of the institution at a critical moment for press freedom in the country.
So far, IPYS has not issued an official statement regarding this mass resignation, but it is expected to do so in the coming hours. Like the signatories of this letter.
