Teams from the Petrópolis Health Department meet daily to define the day’s actions, in addition to sharing experiences and results about the work that has been done in the last 13 days. The situation room set up at the Casa da Educação has teams from the municipal and state health departments and the Ministry of Health to align the work.
In the evaluation of the Secretary of Health of Petrópolis, Marcus Curvelo, the partnership between the three powers was essential to guide the teams in a crisis situation. “The technicians who came to collaborate with us have already been on the field in the tragedies in Brumadinho and, more recently, in Bahia. expertise helped us to realize that municipal health was able to respond quickly to the status of tragedy that was imposed on the city”, said Curvelo today (28).
“The city hall teams have a responsiveness and listening capacity that surprised us. This is due to the transparent and frank management that we have seen here. We found no resistance to sharing the experiences we have already acquired in other claims. I reinforce that we learned a lot from Petrópolis, and this will serve as an experience for future events”, said members of the ministry team, during a meeting held this morning. One of the teams left the mountain town today (28) praising the organizational capacity and resistance of the secretariat and municipal employees.

Since the 16th of February, the Primary Care, Health Surveillance and Epidemiological teams have been working in official and community shelters to assist the population affected by the rain. Situations of infection by covid-19, parasitic diseases, water quality are verified. The hygienic conditions of the places are also attested and psychosocial care is promoted, among others.
“We organized ourselves to cover the entire hot area of the event, with the Family Health Posts and Basic Health Units that were not affected by landslides. And with mobile teams giving special attention to the sheltered, we created an effective service network. The teams are committed and doing a great job”, highlighted Marcus Curvelo.
The situation room will continue to work until the status crisis is normalized in the municipality, informed the Secretary of Health.

The Petrópolis City Hall continues to monitor the work of the Integrated Disaster Management Office, installed at Colégio Estadual D. Pedro II, from where teams from different municipal, state and federal agencies continue to guide the work of searches, assistance to the population and recovery of affected areas. Military personnel from the Fire Department are carrying out today (28) the search for the Piabanha River, where three victims are suspected to have disappeared, in addition to two others at Chácara Flora.
The municipal government works on different fronts to assist affected people. The Civil Defense maintains reinforcement in the teams for the inspections in occurrence that reached 3,386 this Monday (28). So far, 1,747 inspections are in progress. A staff of more than 50 Civil Defense agents seeks to respond to all calls.
In addition to landslides, the teams assess factors that cause structural damage to properties and public roads, geological risks on slopes, falling trees and poles, in addition to preventive inspections. Civil Defense agents work on the assessment by affected area, to delimit the regions at greatest risk. Subsequently, they work on the specific analysis by property.
To speed up the execution of all inspections, the agency has the support of different sectors of the municipal movement, such as the departments of Works, Service, Security and Public Order, Health, Education, Social Assistance, in addition to the Municipal Development Company of Petrópolis. (COMDEP) and Companhia Petropolitana de Trânsito e Transportes (CPTrans). Civil Defense also has the support of bodies such as the Department of Mineral Resources of the State of Rio de Janeiro (DRM-RJ), the Brazilian Geological Service (CPRM), in addition to volunteer engineers and geologists to provide quick assistance.

On the other hand, the Social Assistance Secretariat continues to provide assistance to 876 people in the 14 support points that the municipality maintains in public schools. Families who are temporarily sheltered receive food, support for hygiene care, social assistance, health and psychologists. The people who are in the shelters have already been registered in the Aluguel Social program.
The secretariat clarified that the number of people temporarily assisted at support points may vary, since families are able to be accommodated in family homes or are already being directed to residences, from the granting of the social rent benefit. The support points have also been a reference for people who, until now, were being cared for in solidarity shelters, structured voluntarily by the communities.
