Sitaram Yechury, leader of the Indian Communist Party and defender of the Cuban regime, dies

AREQUIPA, Peru – Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI (M), passed away on Thursday at the age of 72, the political organization said. During his lifetime, the leader was a staunch defender of the Cuban regime and its doctrines.

The party organization, the state agency quotes Latin Pressreported that its leader died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (IIAMs) in New Delhi, from complications of a respiratory tract infection.

The PCI(M) thanked the doctors and said they would give more details about the public wake.

Sitaram Yechury was born on 12 August 1952 and after completing his schooling in Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad, he moved to Delhi. While there, in 1970, he completed his high school degree and three years later he completed his bachelor’s degree. in Economicsfirst class, at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi.

In 1975, he completed his Masters in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

In 1984 he was invited to the Central Committee of the CPI(M), which he joined as a member at the 12th Congress in 1985; then, in 1988, he was elected to the Central Secretariat at the 13th Congress and finally to the Political Bureau at the 14th Congress in 1992.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the Politburo, General Secretary of the party organisation, editor of the CPI(M)’s central weekly, Peoples’ Democracy and a member of the Rajya Sabha (the Upper House of the Parliament of India).

Less than two months ago, the communist leader participated in an activity for the 71st anniversary of the assault on the Moncada barracksa date celebrated by the Cuban regime every July 26.

At the event, Yechury defended Castroism after Washington included the island in the list of state sponsors of terrorism. According to the late leader, Cuba was a “bulwark of global solidarity that is going through one of the most difficult moments in its history.”

Yachury also stressed that support for the regime is part of the commitment and principle of his organization.
