AREQUIPA, Peru – Those who knew Ary Fonseca for her role as a sweet and devoted mother in the soap opera The right to dreamthey probably didn’t even recognize her when she made the jump to the current one Be rebornwhere the actress plays a luxurious, complex villain that viewers love to hate.
“Sit back and think,” Roxana would say, a phrase that the character has popularized in the three months that Cubavisión has been broadcasting. the dramatizedone that Cubans on and off the Island are also following on YouTube.
The phrase is a catchphrase that Ary chose consciously, to leave a mark of personality on Roxana. As a result, the three words are already recognizable in the popular slang of many Cubans, becoming a colloquialism as it was before. Alexander Socorro with its “salsa, manquito and beer” in Oh Havana!; or the “maximize my money”, “Do you dare!” by Blanca Rosa Blanco and Monste Duane, respectively, in The hidden face of the moon.
About his time at Be rebornAry Fonseca spoke with the official newspaper Escambraysharing details of his life and behind the scenes of television production.
“The first thing I confess is that when I started reading the script for the character of Roxana, I honestly felt rejection towards it, and I even told the director: I remember it was something like, ‘I’m on chapter X, and I’m really disliking her, to be honest’. And she simply replied: ‘Yes, but the only one who can’t dislike her is you’.”
That advice was a trigger for the young artist and from that moment on she began to study the role, to humanize it, to avoid falling into a cliché.
“It’s true, she’s a bad person, but why, how much is there behind each of her words or actions; what’s going on in her life, where she comes from, what her background is, and from there I was able to create a story and try to delve deeper into her feelings and why she did things.”
Ary describes herself as a super entrepreneurial girl, very hard-working and organized, hence his antagonistic character supposes a distancing diametrically opposed to the person he is.
“Roxana’s character and I have nothing in common; I am a person; on a personal level, the story I created for her has nothing to do with my life. I think the only points of contact I have with the character are the fact that we are vain and always want to be well-groomed. Of course, the most important thing is that we both come from the countryside, but with very different destinies and attitudes.”
The filming work was a unique experience for the actress. According to her, it was totally different from her experience in The right to dreamwhere filming took place over a week. Until then, Ary had never faced such a long shoot, with all that it entails.
“Carrying the character with me for six months was tremendous because it is in so many locations, which means a lot of calls, so I was Roxana for quite a while. And adopting it in my life made me continue living it sometimes outside of work. At times I was sitting in one place and I felt like I was watching as the character.”
The actress shares another curious anecdote, in which she remembers that sometimes when talking with her friends, she could suddenly feel like Roxana. In this regard, she assures that concentrating for so long on paperunconsciously, stays inside.
“But, without a doubt, the taste that the character left me with is one of total satisfaction. I confess that I loved building him, studying him and living each of his emotions, his transitions because he is a person with many ups and downs and suddenly he is generating and calculating so many actions at the same time, that he is a total machine of emotions.”
The soap opera Be rebornlike her character, has left an unquestionable mark on the life and career of Ary Fonseca. Her work in the popular production will mark a before and after in the actress’s career.
“At the end of the shoot, the only thing I could think of was to make a video crying about the farewell, because getting up and knowing that there is nothing more, that what you did is over, leaves an inexorable nostalgia. And that’s how it is, everything that begins has to end and the result is what you are seeing on screen. Oh yes, of course, I will miss Roxana a lot.”
Looking to the future, Ary has participated in several projects that his followers will be able to enjoy. on Cuban TelevisionFor example, it is scheduled to air in One street and a thousand roadsa TV movie I made with Alberto Luberta, where he also takes on a negative character, but which clarifies is different from Roxana.
He also recorded a teleplay with director Elena Palacio entitled Fatal friendship and participated in a story with Hape, titled Oedipus Rexboth without a release date.
“I also worked on another Elena series, Cats, masks and shadowswhich is about gender violence and is due to air in September. In this series I did play a character that I love, called Lisy. It is very beautiful, I loved it and what satisfied me the most is that it is totally different from everything I have done so far in my career. It generated a lot of emotional, spiritual and mental commitment. It was all super special, you will see the result.”
