Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), ordered the suspension of the right to visits to Lieutenant Colonel Rodrigo Bezerra Azevedo, Army officer, arrested since November by the Federal Police’s Countercoup Operation.
The minister’s decision was taken after the Planalto Military Command reported that the lieutenant colonel’s sister, Dhebora Bezerra de Azevedo, tried to take to the detained officer a panettone box that also contained “a headset, a USB cable and a card memory”.
The episode occurred last Saturday afternoon (28), in the prison of the Brasília Army Police Battalion (BPEB), where Rodrigo Bezerra Azevedo is in preventive detention.
The defense of Lieutenant Colonel Rodrigo Bezerra Azevedo must present a petition for Minister Alexandre de Moraes to review the decision. In audio sent to Brazil Agencylawyer Jeffrey Chiquini stated that he will “probably” file a request “for the individualization of conduct. Suspending all visits is too much,” he said, referring to the purpose of avoiding the ban on visits by his wife and daughter.
Chiquini also commented that she had made contact with Dhebora Bezerra de Azevedo. “I talked to his sister just now, she told me the misunderstanding. In fact, she confirmed the information, but did not access the prison. She never came in with the phone.”
Clandestine action
Lieutenant Colonel Rodrigo Bezerra Azevedo is member of the Army Special Forcesalso known as “black kids”, specialized in guerrilla actions, infiltration and other elite military tactics.
A Federal Police investigation describes that Azevedo is one of the soldiers who participated in the clandestine action on December 15, 2022 to execute Minister Alexandre de Moraes in Brasília.
According to the PF, the lieutenant colonel responded by the code name “Brazil” in messages intercepted by investigators on a cell phone, which was later rehabilitated with another line number in the name of Azevedo himself.
At the time the PF investigations were revealed, lawyer Jeffrey Chiquini denied that Rodrigo Bezerra Azevedo responded by the code name “Brazil” and also said he had evidence that on the day of the clandestine action the soldier was at home with his family, in Goiânia, as he is your birthday.
