SIP urges the world to "close lines" and take action due to the situation of journalists in Nicaragua

The president of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), Jorge Canahuati, alerted the international community on Tuesday about the sentences against Nicaraguan journalists and opponents.

In turn, he called for “closing ranks” against the government of President Daniel Ortega, whom he pointed out as “limiting the freedoms of citizens and destroying the rule of law.”

Canahuati recently referred to the trial against the journalist and opposition Christiana Chamorro, sentenced this week to eight years in prison for alleged money laundering.

Similarly, the director of the SIP mentioned the judicial process to which the manager of the newspaper is being subjected the pressJuan Lorenzo Holmann, who has been under arrest since August 2021.

“We are facing one of the fiercest dictatorships in Latin American history,” said Canahuati, referring to the Ortega government, which has been in power for more than 13 consecutive years.

Similarly, he expressed that “the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship” challenges and forces “to think about joint actions that we must promote with other press organizations on the continent.”

“We must close ranks to prevent the Nicaraguan regime from continuing to restrict the freedoms of citizens and destroying the rule of law,” said Canahuati.

In this sense, he mentioned that the situation in Nicaragua will have ample space at the next meeting of the IAPA where “beyond the permanent denunciation and solidarity” work will be done to develop an action plan with concrete measures “that help neutralize the subjugation of the regime against the individual and social freedoms of Nicaraguans.”

The next IAPA meeting will be held from April 19 to 21. The issue of Nicaragua will be addressed from the first day.

While awaiting sentencing, the manager of the press

The newspaper the presswhich was managed by Juan Lorenzo, reported that his political trial is scheduled to continue this Wednesday and the guilty plea will be issued.

The media reported that on Tuesday, the manager of the newspaper had presented a fever during the trial, for which he was assisted by the infirmary at the El Chipote prison, where the trial is being held.

Holmann is accused by the justice related to Ortega of the alleged crime of money laundering through the newspaper the pressa medium critical of the management of Daniel Ortega.

The arrest of the manager and raid on the headquarters of the press has made difficult the work of the newspaper that initially slashed its staff. It is currently standing digitally and maintaining certain security measures.
