“It is known that at around 5:00 a.m., members of the Mexican Army were the object of an attack with firearms by armed civilians, allegedly members of organized crime, while they were carrying out prevention and surveillance work, this in the town known as La Loma de Redo,” he said.
“In response, the military elements repelled the attack that they suffered in that community; it is reported that 5 civilians were killed in the exchange of gunfire; noting that there is no knowledge of any Sedena element having been injured,” the authority added.
“Preventive work is continuing in the area, so the competent authority will be the one to announce the results obtained at the end of the field work,” he said.
Last week, following the capture of Ismael Mario Zambada García, known as “El Mayo,” leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, and Joaquín Guzmán López, son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, in El Paso, Texas, the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) reinforced security in Culiacán, Sinaloa, with the deployment of 200 elite members of the Special Forces Corps.
The military personnel arrived at Military Air Base No. 10, located west of Culiacán in the Bachigualato neighborhood, with the mission of collaborating closely with local authorities to reduce the illegal activities of criminal groups present in the aforementioned municipality, through joint actions that allow guaranteeing freedom, order and public peace.
