SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguezafter having criticized the recent economic measures announced by the island’s regime, clarified this Wednesday, July 24, that he is not changing his “principles” and that he does not regret “his life.”

On his blog, Second dateThe Cuban musician considered it a “manipulation” that the independent media had alluded to his previous statements where he believed that “we,” the Cubans, were destroying the country. “If we do not quickly dismantle what weighs us down, we will be swallowed up by our own creations. They are already chewing us up. Let us wake up,” he said then.

Now, by way of retraction, he believes that his words were misinterpreted by “those opposed to the political process that has been called the Cuban Revolution”: “They say that I am changing, as if it were possible to regret my life.”

Rodriguez, who criticized the inefficiency of the current system and argued that a system had been built “complicated apparatus” who is now a “burden”, attacks the media that reported on his position because, according to him, he has always expressed what he thinks.

“My common but unequivocal existence refutes the falsity of these statements. Because I did not read about the revolution nor was it taught to me by others. I lived it since I was a child, when everyone on my street knew that the bakery sold July 26 bonds and if we saw a policeman coming we would go and warn the baker. In our games with rubber soldiers, the good guys were always the rebels and the bad guys were the government policemen,” wrote the musician.

In his diatribe, he defended his non-affiliation with the only party permitted in Cuba and listed the reasons why he no longer belongs to the National Assembly of People’s Power, justifying that it is due to bureaucratic reasons but not “convictions.”

“At 60 years old, I completed three terms in the Assembly and asked to be discharged, as well as to retire from work, because I could never stand bureaucracy. Afterwards, the first thing I did was a long tour of prisons, which was followed by 10 years of touring the most needy neighborhoods. The pandemic stopped us. In the subsequent economic situation, I believe that continuing would create more problems than it would solve,” he argued.

Rodriguez, dear to the Cuban government, concluded by arguing that socialism “has better human possibilities than capitalism”; however, he said, lukewarmly, that it will have to be a “truly superior socialism.”

On his blog, the Cuban musician had gathered opinions from several pro-government economists following the most recent measures announced by the National Assembly of People’s Power.

In a text, together with those of economic experts, he stated that “this” was being destroyed. He also mentioned the bureaucratic obstacles in investment processes and the dismissal of many processes due to all the ways that slow them down.

Among the harshest criticisms published by Rodríguez’s blog was that of Juan Triana Cordoví, who blamed Miguel Díaz-Canel for the Cuban crisis.

The professor at the Center for Studies of the Cuban Economy at the University of Havana attacked the Cuban ruler, following his speechor during the third ordinary session of the Tenth Legislature of the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP).

Triana said that the economic debacle on the island is mainly a consequence of the fact that during the last eight years, the regime has concentrated investment (35%) in the hotel sector, neglecting basic sectors such as agriculture, fishing, the sugar cane industry, the food industry and energy.

In this regard, he regretted that Díaz-Canel does not recognize his personal responsibility and that of the government in these erroneous decisions.
