Candidate Silvio Mendes (União) won the race for mayor of Teresina, with 52.27% of the valid votes. Fábio Novo (PT) came in second place, with 43.17% of the valid votes. So far, 99.24% of the ballots have been counted. Mendes returns to command of the municipality, where he was mayor from 2005 to 2010.
Silvio Mendes de Oliveira Filho is 75 years old and is a member of União Brasil. A doctor by training and specialized in orthopedics, he took over the Municipal Health Department in the 1990s and headed the organization for 12 years. He was elected mayor of Teresina for the first time in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. He was also president of the Piauí Medicine Association.
