SANTIAGO. The Declaration of Santiago de los Caballeros, approved at the LVI Meeting of Heads of State and Government of the member countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA), supported the Dominican Republic’s request to the international community to seek answers to the crisis in Haiti.

In the document signed this Friday by the representatives of Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and the Dominican Republic, concern was expressed in the economic, social, political and humanitarian fields, which hinder the development of the Dominican nation before the situation of Haiti.

“We support the urgent call that the Dominican Republic has made to the international community, in order to address this serious crisis, launching joint actions and efforts to enable a lasting and sustainable response in Haiti,” the statement said.

In it, the General Secretariat of SICA is also asked to coordinate with the General Secretariat of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), the preparation of a proposal for regional action to combat sargassum in the Greater Caribbean. Taking into account all the projects that already exist to face this problem.

In the same way, the Central American Agricultural Council and the General Secretariat of SICA were commissioned to prepare a proposal to create a “mechanism for the joint purchase of food, fertilizers and agricultural inputs” that contributes to building and/or strengthening the corresponding strategic reserves in the States. region of.

It was also approved to continue coordinating actions to address and mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and “other global events that affect our economies, particularly those related to the food security of our populations.”
