Ship from Trinidad, without notifying INEA, carried out rescue activity near Carúpano

ONSA noted that the Fair Chance boat capsized near Carúpano, Sucre state, with seven people on board. The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard ship rescued two of the crew members and there are still five to be saved

The NGO National Organization for Maritime Rescue and Safety of the Aquatic Spaces of Venezuela (ONSA) warned on Sunday that the Trinidad and Tobago coast guard, involved in the death of a two-year-old baby who was traveling with his mother from Venezuela, carried out search and rescue tasks within the Contiguous Zone and jurisdictional waters of our country, specifically near Carupano, Sucre state.

According to ONSA, the operations carried out by the aforementioned ship were to assist the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines-flagged ship, called “Fair Chance”, which capsized, leaving the hull exposed on the surface. However, they warn that these operations were carried out without making the corresponding notification to the National Institute of Aquatic Spaces (INEA).

In the opinion of the NGO, the presence of that coast guard ship represents a “violation of the aquatic space” of our country with these tasks that were carried out.

However, he reported that in the incident with the Fair Chance boat, at least two people of the seven who were on board were rescued. The survivors were taken to Trinidad and Tobago, while there are still five missing crew members.

The incident, according to information provided by ONSA, occurred on Saturday, April 2, in the aforementioned area when the Fair Chance, which was carrying steel, turned over. They warn that the situation of the boat represents a danger for navigation at present.

The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard vessel referred to by ONSA was the one involved in the shares at the beginning of February 2022 when its crew members shot at a peñero with Venezuelan migrants on board, killing a two-year-old baby and injuring his mother, justifying the shots by an alleged action of ramming the Trinitarian ship.

Human rights defender Orlando Moreno reported that the infant, whose name was Yaelvis Santoyo Sarabia, was in the arms of his mother, Darielvis Sarabia, and both were part of the 20 people who set sail this Saturday night, bound for Trinidad.
