In the agreement that was reached with the United States to remedy Mexico’s water debt, no more amount was delivered than that stipulated in the bilateral treaty that has been in force since 1944, nor was it put at risk what was necessary for the consumption of Mexican cities or what the national agricultural sector requires, said President Claudia Sheinbaum.
In his press conference, he highlighted that during bilateral talks last week, the United States insisted that the entire debt be delivered in December; The representation of the Mexican government argued that it was not physically possible to send the entire amount, so a part was agreed upon for this month and the rest in subsequent weeks.
Furthermore, Sheinbaum explained that the US authorities insisted that Mexico had refused to deliver its part, so special emphasis was placed on the fact that “it is not that we did not want to deliver it, but it simply has not rained enough. An agreement was reached to continue meeting; it is agreed upon for five years, but now we will see, based on the amount that is collected in the rainy period, how we can solve what was not delivered properly. the previous five years, when there was a drought.”
