President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo yesterday expressed her disagreement with the exclusion of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua in the next Summit of the Americas, to be held on December 4 and 5 in the Dominican Republic.

Yesterday morning, he announced that he will not attend that hemispheric forum to address the country’s internal affairs. “No, I’m not going to attend,” he remarked in response to a specific question.

He indicated that his administration is analyzing whether there will be representation from the Mexican Foreign Ministry at the tenth Summit of the Americas, which will be held in Punta Cana.

Regarding the exclusion of three governments from the continent – as happened in the previous Summit, held in Los Angeles in 2022 –, the head of the federal Executive pointed out:

“We do not agree with the exclusion of any country, but also, in the current circumstance, no. We must be attending to the country and in particular the emergency,” he said in reference to the havoc that the intense rains last week left in five entities of the country and other national issues.

The day before, at the ninth Solidarity Meeting with Cuba, which took place in Mexico City, delegates from 35 countries expressed their rejection of the exclusion of the island, Venezuela and Nicaragua from the tenth Summit of the Americas. In response, they announced an “alternative summit” on the same dates, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to hear the voices of those who were not invited.

They said that even though the Dominican president, Luis Abinader, promised that the plenary session would be inclusive, due to “pressure” from the United States government, the decision was made not to convene the aforementioned countries again.

It should be remembered that these three nations were not invited to the previous summit, in 2022. In response, the then Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, did not attend as a sign of protest against this exclusion. In his place, former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard traveled.
