As part of the relationship that will be established with the future administration of Republican Donald Trump, the government of Mexico will present a report in which, with numbers, the relevance of the contributions of Mexican migrants to the economy of the neighboring nation will be shown and the benefits that the T-MEC has left them, said President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The president pointed out the above after the head of the Ministry of Economy (SE), Marcelo Ebrard, asserted that we must respond in the same way to Trump’s threats to impose 25 percent tariffs on Mexican imports.
“The most important thing is to demonstrate, with information, the benefits for the United States of the work of our countrymen there (…) And also, the importance of integration, the advantages of having the trade agreement,” the head of the Executive tempered in response to a question related to Ebrard’s statements.
In the case of migration, he noted, the report will include the contributions of our compatriots state by state in the neighboring nation. They contribute a lot to the United States economy
.
During the six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the then chancellor, Alicia Bárcena – today head of the Ministry of the Environment – announced that in 2023, the 37.7 million Mexicans who live there – 5.3 million without documents – generated 324.8 thousand million dollars.
Of that figure, 63.3 billion (18.5 percent) were sent to Mexico, and the largest part, 81.5 percent, 265 billion dollars, was reinvested in the US economy.
Sheinbaum commented that in the same way it will be made known how much the T-MEC favors the United States.
The treaty helps Mexico, but greatly benefits the United States. So what would a tariff mean for your economy? We are very advanced in this work.
He revealed that Ebrard, with the support of the Ministry of Finance, is working on this project.
Official information shows that thanks to the T-MEC, Mexico has become key to United States trade, being its main partner in the matter.
The President considered that these numbers They are fundamental for the review that will be carried out in 2026 of the trade agreement, but also for any point that the United States government is going to make.
in bilateral negotiations.
We are working on all of this. We will always defend Mexico. And the most important thing is that the moment we have the opportunity to meet, whether with Trump’s transition team or once he takes office, in this high-level dialogue we will see what Mexico has done on issues of fentanyl and migration, as well as the economic one, which is essential to strengthen the financial relationship.
