President Claudia Sheinbaum yesterday gave details of the conversation she had on Wednesday with Donald Trump, the next president of the United States. He pointed out that they did not talk about tariffs, but rather about migration and fentanyl trafficking, which is why he ruled out a “potential tariff war.”

We never proposed that we were going to close the border; we do not agree with itthe president stressed. He added that the United States must end the blockade on Cuba and the sanctions on Venezuela, because they encourage migration and only the people suffer.

He pointed out that the divergent versions of the conversation are due to the fact that everyone has their own way of communicatingbut, he emphasized, I can assure you, I give you the certainty that you will never The proposal to close the border was made.

He added that he explained to Trump that the migrant caravan for which the Republican announced the imposition of 25 percent tariffs on Mexican exports is not actually going to reach the border because it is already being served in Mexico.

Sheinbaum also said that during the phone call they talked about security and bilateral cooperation mechanisms to address one of Trump’s central concerns: the fentanyl consumption crisis in the United States.

He added that the next head of the White House was interested in the dissemination campaign Fentanyl killswhich was undertaken by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, so since yesterday he sent materials about that plan to Trump.

We are strengthening the security strategy. In due course we will talk about the weapons that come from the United States to Mexico; What happens in your country with the criminals who sell these products illegally and the joint collaboration that must always exist in the context of our sovereignties, both the United States and Mexico. Collaboration can be done within this framework, Sheinbaum indicated.

The President explained that she explained to Trump the immigration strategy that has been reinforced as of January 2024, to face the rebound in the flow of people in December 2023. She said that she explained that Mexico finances social programs in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala to discourage the mobility of undocumented immigrants.

He explained that Mexico has a comprehensive strategy to deal with the irregular flow of people, which is complemented by the facilities opened by the US government to expedite the entry of undocumented immigrants through the CBP One mechanism, which can already be processed in southern Mexico.

trump He obviously recognized the effort being madestated the president. We did not particularly talk about the issue of tariffs, but rather the issue that he raised as a matter of interest and that, if not, he was going to impose tariffs. It was no longer approached that way..

He reported that there will be other conversations between both teams before Trump takes office next January. The important thing, he considered, was to address the approach he made about the reasons why he would impose tariffs.

–How will this potential tariff war impact the review of the T-MEC (North American trade agreement)?

–There is not going to be a potential tariff war.

He recalled that in 2026 the treaty will be under review and that Plan Mexico has, among other objectives, import substitution. The Business Council that was formalized this Wednesday will participate in this strategy.

He specified that said body is honorary; Its members do not have contracts with the government and will not make decisions.
