The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumsaid this Tuesday morning that, although the define fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction could give the United States more arguments for operations in national territory, they do not imply that they will translate into direct actions against the country.
Furthermore, he reaffirmed that the federal government will not accept interventions under any circumstancesinterference or unilateral actions from abroad.
During her morning press conference, the president recalled that her government promoted constitutional reforms to protect national sovereignty, particularly with the incorporation of new paragraphs to article 40 and adjustments to article 19 of the Constitution, which — she said — were approved by Congress.
These modifications establish that The people of Mexico will not consent to acts harmful to the integrityindependence and sovereignty of the country, such as coups d’état, electoral interference or violations of the national territory by land, sea, air or space.
The head of the federal Executive emphasized that any intervention in investigation or prosecution of crimes in Mexican territory, without express authorization from the Mexican State, constitutes a serious crime. “That is what we incorporated,” he said, while reiterating his government’s willingness to collaborate with the United States to prevent drugs from reaching that country, but under the principle of shared responsibility.
Sheinbaum insisted that bilateral security cooperation cannot be understood as subordination. “They get one part and we get another,” he said, highlighting that Mexico has made a significant effort to reduce violence. He announced that in the next security report a new drop in homicides during December will be announced and assured that, in a period of one year and three months, homicide has decreased steadily.
Faced with the statements of the former US president donald trumpwho said that something would have to be done with Mexico, after the arrest of Nicolás Madurothe president maintained that her government privileges permanent dialogue. He explained that there is constant communication between both administrations, headed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of State, as well as between the security areas and the armed forces of both countries. “Dialogue does not mean that you agree on everything, but it allows progress in cooperation and coordination,” he pointed out.
In this context, Sheinbaum considered the possibility of unilateral actions by the United States against Mexico to be distant, and reiterated that the way to address the problem of drug trafficking and fentanyl is collaboration, not threats.
