President Claudia Sheinbaum guaranteed yesterday that there will be comprehensive reparation for the damage for all victims of the Interoceanic Train accident and stressed that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) “has to carry out a responsible investigation” to clarify the causes of the accident.
He reported that 36 people remain hospitalized (although six were discharged at night) after the derailment that occurred on Sunday, when a train traveling from Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, to Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, left the tracks with 250 people on board, leaving 13 dead and more than 100 injured.
In her morning in the Palace, the president affirmed that support for the victims and their families will be permanent and will not be limited to the financial first aid provided after the tragedy. “Evidently, there will be a comprehensive repair of the damage, if the family decides so. That is a process that comes, first, from the train insurer, and then what is determined by the prosecutor’s office,” he noted and specified that this procedure will be carried out in direct communication with the victims and in accordance with the law.
Sheinbaum recalled that the federal government provided immediate support of 30 thousand pesos to cover urgent expenses of family members. “It is support that is given to them immediately so that they do not have expenses,” he explained.
The President reported that on Monday she visited hospitals in Oaxaca and held meetings with relatives of the deceased and added that a public servant was appointed for each affected family to provide permanent support. “What we must do is always be close, be present and be close to the victims.”
Specialized expert reports
Regarding the investigations, he maintained that the FGR has already opened the investigation folders and must prepare a technical opinion based on specialized expert reports: “The prosecution has to carry out a responsible investigation, first the technical opinion of what caused the accident and, from there, the definition of responsibilities.” He specified that the experts analyze various aspects, including the information from the train’s black box.
In parallel, the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency will carry out its own opinion under international protocols and in coordination with the FGR. Sheinbaum announced that, before fully resuming passenger service on the affected road, the federal government will seek independent international certification.
From Ixtepec, Oaxaca, the Undersecretary of Human Rights, Population and Migration of the Ministry of the Interior, Félix Arturo Medina Padilla; the director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Zoé Robledo; The director of the IMSS-Bienestar, Alejandro Svarch, and the medical director of the Issste, Gustavo Reyes Terán, reported that those hospitalized receive comprehensive medical care, psychological support and legal assistance.
