The mayor’s arrest was recorded the same day as the journalist Mary Beth Sheridan noted in an op-ed in The New York Times that President Claudia Sheinbaum is not only facing the drug cartels, but also a network of political collusion that, if thoroughly confronted, could put her own government coalition at risk.
In this regard, Sheinbaum denied that there is a relationship between his government and organized crime, and assured that, if so, the results in the reduction of homicides would not be observed.
“It is a fictional article because there is no proof, since this has been part of the campaign since the president (Andrés Manuel López Obrador, ‘narco-president’) was there,” he stated.
Complaints against the mayor
The president insisted that when there are complaints about possible links to crime, the procedure corresponds to the prosecutor’s offices and must be supported by evidence within the accusatory criminal system, as occurred with the arrest of the mayor of Morena in Tequila.
“It is not that there is an investigation of officials, but it is based on the complaints and in particular, in the case of Tequila I even personally received complaints from businessmen in the area, from citizens who complained about the situation they were experiencing and accused the municipal president. From there, and from other complaints that were presented directly to the Attorney General’s Office, this entire investigation was opened that finally led to this arrest yesterday,” he explained.
The mayor of Tequila, Diego Rivera, was arrested this Thursday as part of Operation Swarm, with which around 60 people have been detained. There were four investigation files for extortion against the Morenista.
The Secretary of Public Security, Omar García Harfuch, explained that due to the constant complaints that were received against the mayor of Tequila, an investigation folder was started. “Now that with the arrival of the prosecutor (Ernestina Godoy) we started the folder and the entire security cabinet provided information about this envelope, there was a great job of collecting information,” he said.
President Sheinbaum explained that before Rivera came to power, there were never any indications that he had a relationship with organized crime.
“In that case, of the state prosecutors’ offices and the Attorney General’s Office, there was no investigation file or any indication that there could be a link with organized crime or that upon reaching the municipal presidency he was going to commit acts of corruption. It would be bad if once one knows, one does not act, then since there were complaints, the investigation is carried out and the arrest came yesterday,” he highlighted.
