The Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office accuses Javier Corral of embezzling 98 million pesos during his administration.
The former president has said that it is all about revenge on the part of María Eugenia Campos, current governor of Chihuahua, and César Duarte, former state governor who was imprisoned during Corral’s term.
“In this case, she pointed out that truth and justice are not of interest, but rather that Maru Campos’ desire for revenge prevails in the fight against corruption that my administration carried out, of which she was a beneficiary and for which she was linked to criminal proceedings,” Corral explained on her social networks.
“Judicial authorities are lied to in order to obtain arrest warrants, and society is then lied to with the complicity of media outlets bought with public money,” he added.
The attempted arrest of Javier Corral, former governor of Chihuahua, by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of that entity in a bar in the Roma neighborhood in the capital of the country, unleashed an institutional confrontation between authorities of the northern state and the Prosecutor’s Office of Mexico City.
This attempted arrest occurs just weeks before Javier Corral is sworn in as a plurinominal senator of the Republic, as part of the Morena party bench.
The direct confrontation between former Governor Corral and the current Governor, Maria Eugenia Campos, dates back to 2016, when both were party colleagues and during the 2021 elections, where there were mutual accusations of corruption.
On the way to the succession of the Chihuahua government, Javier Corral began an investigation called the “secret payroll” involving former federal PAN legislator and possible candidate of her own party for state government, María Eugenia Campos.
In the investigation arising from proceedings carried out against the former governor Cesar Duarteit was reported that the PRI member had delivered just over 10 million pesos in bribes to various deputies, including María Eugenia Campos when she was leader of the PAN bench in the Congress of Chihuahua between 2014 and 2015 and one million pesos monthly when she was mayor of the capital of that state in 2016.
For these events, the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation file against Maru Campos for alleged acts of corruption, crimes for which she was linked to proceedings, but her process continued at liberty.
In January 2021, Javier Corral decided to distance himself from his party’s candidate and accused her of being part of the inner circle of former PRI governor César Duarte.
For the above, Maru Campos accused Javier Corral of acting against her and in favor of the Morena party, for which reason she requested the National Executive Committee of the PAN to expel the then governor.
After assuming power in 2021 as governor of Chihuahua, Maru Campos opened at least four investigations against Javier Corral for embezzlement and misappropriation of funds.
One of these investigations is for the payment of 98 million pesos to a private party to restructure a debt that, according to the anti-corruption prosecutor of Chihuahua, Abelardo Valenzuela Holguín, was not supported and was not justified.
