Sheinbaum indicated that the consulates have legal teams to support Mexicans living in the United States, given Trump’s intention to deport undocumented migrants.
“First we are going to defend the Mexicans there. The consulates already have more lawyers to support them, who can talk to the consulates on the phone because they will be supporting them in the face of anything. If they decide to return to Mexico or come to Mexico, they are well received here, with open arms, here we embrace Mexican men and women,” he indicated.
The president assured that “the United States government knows that it could not advance its economy if it were not for the Mexicans,” because although they send 65,000 million dollars a year in remittances to Mexico, this only represents 20% of their income and The other 80% stays in the United States through the payment of taxes, consumption and savings.
“The people of Mexico have brought our economy forward but also the economy of the United States. What would New York be without the Mixtecs? That’s why we call it Pueblayork, because there they work in services, they work in construction, they also move the economy there forward,” he said.
He highlighted the role of Mexican workers in sectors such as construction, tourism and agriculture, the latter since seven out of every 10 farm workers in the United States are of Mexican origin.
“Would Americans hardly have food on the table if it weren’t for Mexican men and women? The best workers in the field are the Mexicans, let no one think otherwise,” he said.
However, Sheinbaum stated that he hoped to reach an understanding with Trump, since during the six-year term of Andrés Manuel López there was a good relationship between both leaders.
