The president asked the State Prosecutor’s Office, headed by Lisbeth Jiménez Aguirre, to explain whether Rafael León Segovia, who dedicates his coverage to security issues in the state, committed a “real and proven” crime.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the crime for which Latifa León, as the journalist is known, is being investigated, should not be related to her professional work.
He also commented that the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, has already been in contact with the governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle, who said that they are also waiting for clarifications from the state Prosecutor’s Office.
Last Wednesday, December 24, the journalist was arrested for the crimes of terrorism, cover-up by favoring and crimes against public security institutions during an operation in which agents of the Ministerial Police and elements of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) participated.
Latifa León has documented several events related to violence, organized crime and security force operations, information that she disseminated mainly through digital platforms and social networks.
Given this arrest, organizations such as Article 19 condemned it, considering that Rafael León Segovia was criminalized for his journalistic work.
“The use of the criminal system as retaliation for the work carried out by journalists is an abuse and has no place in a democracy,” Article 19 said in a statement.
