The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her opinion on the need for the United Nations (UN) to play a more significant role in relation to the threats and aggressions of the United States against Venezuela. During his usual morning press conference, “As we have said, the United Nations has to take a much more leading role in these cases.”
The president made these statements when questioned about the possibility of a call being made in the region to provide support to Venezuela. He pointed out that the Government has been classified as a terrorist organization by Washington, which since August of last year has intensified its military presence in the Caribbean and the Pacific. This deployment has resulted in more than a hundred deaths due to bombings of small boats and the assault of two oil tankers off the Venezuelan coast.
“We do not agree with the interventions, much less military ones, that is the Constitution of our country and it is what we are going to continue defending,” the Mexican president reiterated.
In recent days, the UN Security Council held an emergency session to address the growing aggression by the United States towards Venezuela. Actions discussed include a naval blockade and threats to use force. From Caracas, this meeting was considered as a diplomatic victory, since it was evident that no country, not even US allies, supported the use or threat of force against Venezuela.
For several months now, the United States has had a significant military force deployed off the coast of Venezuela and has carried out bombings against boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific, which have left more than 80 people dead, trying to justify its hostile and unilateral actions as part of the anti-drug fight.
Washington has accused the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, without evidence or support, of leading an alleged drug trafficking cartel, the existence of which has not been reported by any international organization fighting against drug trafficking.
The head of state has repeatedly described the White House’s maneuvers as a smear campaign to justify anything against Venezuela. Along these lines, he denounced that this strategy seeks to tarnish the image of the country and the revolution as a pretext for attacks, something they have done many times.
Likewise, Maduro warned that the real objective of the US is a regime change to take over the immense oil and gas wealth of Venezuela.
