The president Claudia Sheinbaum supported the appointment of Ernestina Godoy as the new head of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), as she assured that she is an “honest” professional, with proven experience and that her arrival will promote a new stage of coordination between security and justice institutions.
Ernestina Godoy – who obtained 97 votes in favor in the Senate – was presented by the Mexican president as a figure with deep knowledge of the justice system, recalling that the lawyer served as attorney general of Mexico City.
In addition, he considered that his management will strengthen relations between the FGR, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the National Guard and the state prosecutors’ offices.
“We also hope that she will be a leader in strengthening the relationship with the prosecutor’s offices of the states of the republic, so congratulations to Ernestina,” said the president during her morning press conference this Thursday.
Regarding the daily interaction between the FGR and the security cabinetSheinbaum Pardo explained that it will be Ernestina Godoy’s decision how often she attends the daily meetings, but she stressed that the presence of the institution—whether through the prosecutor or a representative—is crucial for the joint operation.
He also emphasized that the autonomy of the institution is not at odds with institutional cooperation. “Autonomy does not mean that there is no coordination. Autonomy means that the Executive does not influence the decisions of the Prosecutor’s Office, but we want coordination to guarantee peace and reduce impunity,” he assured.
During her appearance before legislators, after being appointed, Godoy stated that the country faces an “urgent demand” to build a Prosecutor’s Office that is “up to the times”, that places victims at the center of institutional work and that operates with “intelligence, professionalism and probity” to regain citizen trust.
The new prosecutor assured that during her administration there will be no fabrication of culprits or political persecution, but she also emphasized that there will be no impunity either, which is why she will strengthen the protocols of zero tolerance for torture and will severely punish any violation of human rights committed by public servants.
