Designed by the American Willy Chavarría, the Adidas brand launched a footwear inspired by the Yalálag model. The Oaxaca government announced that it would interpose a legal lawsuit against the company for plagiarism.
In this regard, President Sheinbaum said they will seek to strengthen the law so that the sanctions for those who incur some type of plagiarism are clear.
“We are reviewing the strengthening of the law so that the sanctions are clear and also everything that is protected, because many times it is related to archeology, to archaeological pieces, but no, it has to be related to creativity and creation today,” he said.
Of plagiarism to dialogue
Marina Núñez Bespalova, Undersecretary of Cultural Development, Ministry of Culture, informed that after plagiarism that was incurred with the “Oaxaca Slip On”, a dialogue between the company and the artisans will begin, in order to not take away the possibility of establishing some collaboration.
“All the cultural appropriation of indigenous and Afromexican peoples, their cultural expressions, which is also called plagiarism, is the subject of a crime and now what we do from certain guidelines is to try to first there is a dialogue so as not to take the craftsman the possibility of marketing or collaborating with several of these companies that have very broad scopes,” he said.
In the process of talks, he said, the Ministry of Culture gives accompaniment to artisans.
“Those talks will begin especially for compensation to the people who were plagiarized and suffered this cultural appropriation,” he said.
