The Secretary of Mobility of Bogotá, Philip Ramirez, Y Thomas Martins, CEO and co-founder of Tembici, the company that will carry out the project, signed the minutes of initiation of the contract that will allow Bogotá to have its first Bogota Shared Bike System with seasons.
(See: Government supports the second line of the Metro).
After completing the policy procedures and legalization of the contract, the company’s management team visited Bogota in order to meet with the Secretary of Mobility and present him with one of the bicycle models that will be part of the system.
“This is a very important milestone for Bogotans. Many attempts were made to have shared bicycles in the city without having the expected results due to the contractual conditions. On this occasion we have made progress in having the Shared Bicycle System for Bogotá, which represents a very important challenge since it helps us Bogotans move in a sustainable way with a totally revolutionary system.”, affirmed Felipe Ramírez, Secretary of Mobility of Bogotá.
And how will this project work? Here we solve any doubts you may have.
(See: Be careful: this is how they are cloning plates in Bogotá).
What will the Bogotá Shared Bicycle System be like?
The system will initially have 300 stations and 3,300 bicycles, of which 50% will be pedal assisted.
In addition, it will have two main characteristics: it will be an inclusive system with a gender perspective, since it will have 150 manocletas, an accessory that will allow people in wheelchairs to access the system.
In addition, it will have 150 box (or cargo) bicycles and 150 seats to transport girls and boys, which facilitates care trips that are mostly made by women.
On the other hand, it will be the second largest in Latin America, after the Mexico City system.
Where will the stations be located?
The project will be located in the expanded center of the city, between the towns of Usaquén and La Candelaria, and will allow easy connection with the Public Transportation System (TransMilenio and Sitp). In addition, it will offer 20% discounts on their rates for the low-income population.
(See: What does it mean to decree a yellow alert for air quality in Bogotá).
It will have 30 managers and managers on the road to attend to any news and will have 300 supports for bicycle repair. The latter will be free for all citizens.
What will be your rate and means of payment?
The payment process and rates are not defined, Tembici will be the one who, through studies, determines the final costs.
Why a shared bike system?
Shared bicycle systems are a transportation alternative that provide several benefits for the city, according to Tembici and the district authorities: time savings, comfort for commuters, mitigation of traffic congestion, encouragement of healthier lifestyles and reduction of air and noise pollution.
In addition, the shared use of these means has been linked in several cities as a last mile or last kilometer solution, which allows efficient connection of public transport trips with the final destinations of citizens.
(See: Internal migration to Bogotá fell during the last decade).
What technology will the system have?
The Bogotá system will be implemented with PBSC technology, a provider with a worldwide presence that offers intelligent bicycles and stations, which allow the status of each vehicle to be communicated, fast charging and availability to be verified at each station.
It will have a software that allows access to complete and real-time information on the characteristics of the trips, such as schedules, travel times and most frequented areas.
“Being in Bogotá is a dream of Tembici. This is a reference city in active mobility for all its infrastructure and also for the population, which is used to using bicycles on the streets. For Tembici, being able to bring the best shared bicycle project here is, without a doubt, a dream, that is why we have a project with 50% of the fleet with assisted bicycles.”, stated Tomás Martins, CEO and co-founder of Tembici.
