Colombian singer Shakira was named Billboard’s 2023 Woman of the Year, at the first Latina Women in Music gala. The Barranquilla-born star will become the first Latina to receive the award.

According to the site billboard.com Shakira will be recognized during the two-hour special that will be recorded at the Watsco Center in Miami on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

The show will be the first event of its kind for women in Latin music. “Latina Women in Music celebrates Latina artists, executives and creatives who work proactively to achieve positive change, inclusion and gender parity in the music industry, ”says the official portal.

The information was released this Monday morning by Billboard, through a statement in which Leila Cobo, Billboard’s chief content officer for Latin/Spanish, noted that thanks to Shakira, “Latinas around the world were empowered to write and perform deeply personal music. He created a movement entirely on his own and remains more relevant than ever today, with elegance, enormous talent, and a deep tradition of giving back to the community. She is the definition of a woman in music, ”said the executive.

Shakira has sold more than 95 million records worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Ana Gabriel and Thalia, are others who will also be awarded

On the day of the gala, Ana Gabriel will also be honored, who will receive the Living Legend award; Emilia will receive the Rising Artist award; Evaluna will receive the Tradition and Future award; Goyo will be recognized with the Agent of Change award; and Thalia will receive the Poderosa Global award.
