Professor Alina Bárbara López denounces a "attempted kidnapping" by the Cuban political police

The Cuban historian Alina Bárbara López Hernández was detained this Wednesday by State Security and is at the Police station in the La Playa neighborhood, in Matanzas. According to what relatives sent to this newspaper, the teacher was intercepted around 9:30 in the morning, in front of the stadium in the same city, while she was going to her workplace.

Since then, his friends say, “four hours have passed and we are afraid that they are buying time for something more serious, seeing that there is no reaction.” The same sources denounce that the daughters of López Hernández have been left without connection.

The arrest was also confirmed by Leo Fernandez Otano on his social networks, where he wrote: “I demand his immediate release.”

The historian had announced this Tuesday that today she would demonstrate in the Parque de la Libertad, in her city, around noon, after an event held by Ediciones Matanzas that she would attend in the morning. “I will walk there for several hours, with an umbrella and water to hydrate myself,” she wrote in a long post on Facebook, where she warned that she was not willing “to talk to anyone who tries to convince me to abandon my action.” And she sentenced: “I just want to hear these words: ‘You are no longer regulated’. If it is not to say them, do not waste your time. Every week I will do the same.”

The professor assures that in that meeting she said that “the Cuban political system is a potential factory of new political prisoners” and expressed: “I hope that if I go to prison I remember what I said there.”

In the same publication, López Hernandez also revealed that on May 25 he was in Havana for “an exchange.” with Josep Borrellthe high representative for foreign policy of the European Union, of which he did not reveal details or who else attended.

On June 2, López Hernandez made public that he had been informed that he was regulated, that is to say, that he could not leave the Island, and he announced that he would begin to exercise “every week” his “right to peaceful demonstration, this time carrying a sign that will indicate the reasons for my action.”
