Siete internos y un agente penitenciario herido en cárcel de Anamuya en Higüey

SANTO DOMINGO.- The General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC) is investigating the circumstances in which seven prisoners and a surveillance agent were injured this Sunday at the Anamuya Correction and Rehabilitation Center, in Higüey.

The DGSPC announced that, according to preliminary reports, the events occurred on Sunday morning when two inmates were preparing to detain some visitors, in reaction to the fact that a search seized 65 sharp objects and 35 smart cell phones, as well as 222.3 grams of a white powder and 349.0 of a green vegetable that are presumed to be cocaine and marijuana.

A quick security operation by the special forces of the Penitentiary System stopped and dismantled the plan that the inmates intended to carry out, taking advantage of the flow of visits on Sunday.

However, those deprived of their liberty momentarily detained two prison officers and set several mattresses on fire, broke padlocks and sanitary facilities.

In these circumstances, the members of the special surveillance units of the Penitentiary System developed a dialogue process with the inmates that led to the handover of the two detained agents.

In another area of the compound, some inmates started a riot by setting fire to mattresses and breaking padlocks and the doors of the pavilions.

The incident led to the use of force to stop the aggression and safeguard inmates and authorities in the incident in which an agent was injured with a blunt blow and seven inmates with pellets, the DGSPC indicated.
