Candidates who declared themselves to be of indigenous ethnicities were elected mayors of seven Brazilian municipalities in the first round of municipal elections, held last Sunday (6).
In the North Region, Egmar Curubinha (PT), of the Tarian ethnic group, in São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM) was elected; Dr. Raposo (PP), from the Makuxí ethnic group, in Normandia (RR); and Tuaua Benísio (Rede), also from the Makuxí ethnic group, in Uiramutã (RR).
The Minas Gerais cities of São João das Missões and Manga also elected indigenous mayors, both from the Xacriabá ethnic group. In the first, Jair Xakriabá (Republicans) was elected, while in the second, Anastácio Guedes (PT) won.
In Marcação, in Paraíba, the only indigenous mayor was elected, the candidate Ninha (PSD), from the Potiguar ethnicity.
In Pesqueira, Pernambuco, Cacique Marcos (Republicans), from the Xucuru ethnic group, won.
Councilors
Data from the Superior Electoral Court system also shows that 214 indigenous people were elected councilors in the election, 180 men and 34 women.
