The Center for Legal Assistance to Indigenous Peoples, Calpi, reported that the attack occurred around six in the morning when the men from the community went hunting, leaving mostly women and children in the area.
“A person who fled the place reported the death of five community members and the number of women and children killed is unknown, although he assures that there are several,” Calpi warned.
The teams from the Sauni As Ranger organization also received information about burned houses. “It is a community that is the victim of these armed attacks and, now, it is the second time. The entire population of Sauni As is on alert asking for help,” they denounced on their social networks.
Settlers kidnap indigenous community members
Calpi reported that prior to the attack, on Friday March 10, three Mayangna community members and two children who were members of the Mískitu indigenous people were kidnapped by non-indigenous settlers, when the victims were heading from Musawás to the Betlehem community in the Mayangna Sauni As territory, in the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve.
The abductees were identified as canicio taylorevangelical pastor and teacher from the Musawás community, who was traveling with Antonio Gadeaand Lindolfo Charlieall members of the Musawás community, and two miskito children, whose names are unknown. “They were kidnapped when they were traveling on the Waspúk river to their work areas near the community of Betlehem.”
