Setback against Ukraine in the team match marks Cuba’s goodbye to the Judo World Cup

The Cuban judokas failed to overcome their first appearance in the mixed team tournament of the World Championshipby yielding to the representation of Ukraineand thus said goodbye to the universal contest based in Tashkent, Usbekistan.

The Cuban team began the duel with the defeat of Arnaes Odelín (57 kg) against Daria Bilodid, and then achieved a couple of successes thanks to the performances of Magdiel Estrada (73 kg) and Maylín del Toro (63 kg) against Artem Khomula and Nataliia Chystiakova, respectively, in accordance with the official site Cubadebate.

Later, Iván Silva (90 kg) surprisingly gave in to Stanislav Gunchenko, which prevented the representative of the Island from placing himself on the verge of victory, adds the report.

Although the multilaureda Idalys Ortiz was successful in her fight with Yelyzaveta Lytvynenko, the stumble of the recent universal monarch Andy Granda against Yakiv Khammo left the actions even.

With equality, it was necessary to go to the tiebreaker, for which, as clarified Cubadebate, the highest men’s division had already been chosen because Granda and Khammo returned to the tatami. It was the opportunity for revenge for the Cuban, but once again the victory corresponded to the European for the celebration of his team.

To discuss the first place, the teams from France and Japan advanced again, in a reissue of the Olympic final of Tokyo 2020, in which this time the Asians defeated their victimizers of that time and raised the scepter. The teams from Germany and Israel completed the podium, while China and the Netherlands occupied fifth places and South Korea along with Ukraine took seventh places, in an event in which 17 teams participated.

In this way, the actions of the World Championship concluded, in which Cuba ranked eighth by country thanks to the title won by Grand on the last day of the individual tournament. His was the only medal on this occasion and the first title for Cuba in these events since the coronation of Idalys Ortiz at the Chelyabinsk 2014 event.

In addition, he returned the Island to the podium in these contests, after leaving blank last year.

Behind that crown, the most notable results this time were the fifth place for Iván Silva in the 90kg division and seventh from Idalys at +78kg.

However, the rest of the team could not do themselves justice and only Magdiel Estrada (73 kg) and Arnaes Odelín (57 kg) made it to the round of 16. The rest were far from what was expected, by giving up in their first outings and failing to accumulate points for the qualifying ranking for the Olympic Games of Paris 2024.
