The pulmonologist and former Minister of Health, Carlos Morínigo, recalled that the “free healthcare” implemented during the government of Fernando Lugo, led by former Minister Esperanza Martínez, left a nail of 150 million dollars and that part of that debt continues paying so far.
In an interview with 650 AM, the doctor Carlos Morinigo He referred to the proposals and advertisements that are made in the National Concertation, where the candidates refer that with the former Minister of Health, Hope Martinez, free healthcare was achieved in the past and is now intended to be re-implemented.

“We are talking about free healthcare where you go to hospitals and there are no medicines or basic services in departmental capitals. Besides Esperanza Martínez left us a debt of more than US$ 150 million when she left the Government with her “free healthcare” and then we had to do wonders to pay that debt, which is still being paid up to now, we cannot recover from that blow,” he said.
The interviewee deepened that the free health during the administration of Fernando Lugo, was “a media proposal that was applied in a media way”.
Morínigo maintained that there are not enough resources to give a good response to the public. “We cannot make public health free while our budget is in deficit“, he acknowledged.
He regretted that politicians are doing propaganda with free public health, since that has failed in the past, and urged that work be done on full coverage and universal access to health. “I think that many things can be done in public health. We have to sit down and work with the governorates and municipalities. Money was thrown away in a pandemic and with that well used we could have said that we could have free public health. We have to project plans in the short, medium and long term, public policies so that people receive all the attention in their community ”, he pointed out.
