The volume of services in Brazil fell by 0.2% in February this year compared to the previous month. The sector had already had a fall of 1.8% in January. As a result, the segment accumulates a loss of 2% in the first two months of the year, according to data from the Monthly Service Survey (PMS), released today (12) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The sector is 5.4% above the level of February 2020, that is, the pre-covid-19 pandemic period, but 7% below November 2014, the highest point in the survey’s historical series, which began in 2012.
The volume of services grew 7.4% compared to February 2021, 8.4% in the first two months (compared to the same period last year) and 13% in the 12-month period.
From January to February, the fall was driven by two activities: information and communication services (-1.2%) and other services (-0.9%).
On the other hand, three activities increased from January to February: transport (2%), professional, administrative and complementary services (1.4%) and those provided to families (0.1%).
The aggregate of tourist activities, also analyzed by the survey, had a decrease of 1% in the period.
In relation to nominal revenue, services fell by 1.5% compared to January, but grew 13.1% compared to February last year, 14.1% in the first two months and 17.2% in the accumulated of 12 months.
