“Serious mistake”: President Piñera questions the decision of the next government not to renew the State of Exception in the southern provinces

President Sebastian Pinera questioned the decision of the next government not to renew the State of Exception in the provinces of Biobío, Arauco (Biobío region), Cautín and Malleco (La Araucanía). The president described the measure as a “serious mistake.”

“I think it is very necessary that the Chilean Armed Forces can collaborate with our police (…) Violent crimes have fallen by nearly 50%. Is that enough? No, is it progress? Yes,” Piñera said. Sunday, during a 27F commemorative activity held in Talcahuano.

Let us remember that the future Minister of the Interior, Izkia Sichessaid last Friday that the next government will not renew the measure.

“The President-elect has already communicated it, he has defined that the State of Constitutional Exception in Wallmapu will not be renewed,” he said.

“We obviously have a conversation with the local and regional authorities so that this process of lifting all the corresponding measures are taken,” added the future Secretary of State.

Last week, Congress supported a new renewal of the State of Exception in the indicated provinces. The measure is in force since October 12, 2021.
