The Extraordinary Assembly convened by the leadership of Independiente, headed by its president, Hugo Moyano, ended with serious incidents in the vicinity of the clubhousein the center of the Buenos Aires town of Avellaneda, and the suspension of this Saturday’s game against Atlético Tucumánfor the tenth date of the Professional Football League tournament.
The incidents, carried out by self-convened fans (they demand the holding of elections, which have been postponed several times) and the police, left as a result several wounded, including 15 troops, and 10 detainees.
All this ended with the resolution Agency for the Prevention of Violence in Sports (APREVIDE) on the suspension of the game that the Independiente and Atlético Tucumán teams had scheduled this Saturday, as a result of the violent episodes that were recorded in the march of fans of the Avellaneda club to the headquarters while the Assembly was taking place.
“The match between Independiente-Atlético Tucumán is suspended, as a result of the incidents that occurred today at the club’s headquarters,” a source from the security agency of the province of Buenos Aires told Télam.
incidents
The clashes left a provisional result of “15 injured police officers and 10 detainees,” judicial sources confided to Télam, in addition to two injured cameramen from the TN television signal.
Due to what happened, the Functional Unit of Instruction (UFI) 4, specialized in violence in sporting events and others, by prosecutor Mario Walter Prieto, intervened.
The violent events originated when Moyano – harshly questioned – left the Carlos Bottaro gym, where the assembly was held, in an armored car and other leaders guarded by police officers, through a rear exit of the headquarters located at the intersection of the streets Montes de Oca and Levalle.
Hundreds of members and sympathizers immediately mobilized towards the place, who since the early hours of the afternoon had crowded in front of the main entrance, on Avenida Miter 470, asking for “elections now” and with aggravating insults towards the head of the “Rojo But peacefully.
That large group began to throw all kinds of projectiles at the directors on their way out, with the passage intercepted by a strong fence of Buenos Aires infantry police officers, who tried to contain the fervent fans.
Suddenly, the troops began to fire tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets at the rioters who continued to fire projectiles, now at the uniformed men.
In this way, a pitched battle began over Montes de Oca, in the direction of Miter Avenue, which lasted from 7:00 p.m. until past 8:30 p.m., with the infantry already counting on the support of the motorized police.
The result was several wounded, some from the stones and others from the rubber bullets, including members of Independiente, a couple of cameramen from the TN cable signal, in addition to at least 15 members of the police force. There were some apprehensions among the protesters.
The major brawl that broke out on Miter and Montes de Oca, a few meters from the Pueyrredón Bridge, also caused windshields to break and dents in numerous cars, plus the detachment of different posters that were thrown at the police and the burning of several containers. of waste.
The Assembly took place at the headquarters
The leadership of Independiente had taken precautions for the self-convened demonstration by the partnersfor which he had requested police custody, both from the Buenos Aires and the Federal, to cover all the surroundings of the headquarters even with members of special groups.
Thus it was that a large police presence was observed, which finally could not contain the protesters, tired of the harsh institutional and football crisis and with more than seven months of an electoral act suspended, for which they demanded to immediately establish a new date for the scrutiny to renew the club’s authorities, those who exploded when observing the departure of the questioned leaders.
Due to that request and when insults towards Moyano were heard coming from outside the venue, it transpired that in the assembly, some representatives of the opposition requested that the Electoral Board convene a meeting for next Monday to set the date of the electionswhich in principle is scheduled for Wednesday 27.
Moyano was accompanied by the secretary general, Héctor Maldonado; the treasurer, Atilio Bouza; and the auditor of accounts Daniel González -the only four directors-. The Assembly had a limited presence of only 100 associates.
Among the latter, the majority responded to the ruling party, which approved the budget for July 2022 to June 2023 -including some player transfers-, while those who responded to the different opposition factions did not approve it.
Regarding the elections, this Friday the Independent Group, the ruling party, offered a statement in which it recognized that the club was not going to “appeal the disposition of Justice” in terms of allowing the participation of the list headed by the journalist Fabián Doman for Independent Unitwhich had been questioned last December.
For this reason, the electoral act arranged for the 19th of that month was suspended.
In that statement from the ruling party, it was also cited that new elections were expected to be established “for 60 to 70 days,” with which an attempt was made to appease the spirits and temper the demonstration, which evidently had no effect.
Moyano assured that his CD is “doing what corresponds”
The president of Independiente assured this Friday at the assembly that was held at the Miter Avenue club headquarters in the city of Avellaneda, in whose surroundings serious incidents occurred, that the Board of Directors he heads “is doing what corresponds.”
In the eventful assembly held in the Radrizzani gymnasium at the Miter 470 headquarters, Moyano responded to criticism from the crowd of fans waiting outside.
“It is not our fault that the coronavirus has produced what we are experiencing. We are doing what is appropriate. The best way to contribute is to discuss the issues. When malaria was there, those people weren’t screaming outside,” he said, according to TyC Sports.
After the leaders of opposition lists demanded the urgent call for elections during the assembly, Moyano responded: “Nobody doubts the moment we are going through. But the other day I heard that it was the worst moment in the history of the club and that was when we were in B. It’s easy to play brave with 200 people outside.”
Moyano was accompanied by the club’s general secretary, Héctor Maldonado; the treasurer, Atilio Bouza; and the account reviewer Daniel González. In the assembly, the ruling party approved the budget.
While the incidents were taking place in the surrounding streets, Moyano left the assembly aboard vehicles that were inside the Bottaro gym.
