Sergio Ramos announced his retirement from the Spain National Team through his Twitter. The captain of the National Team said goodbye to La Roja, and was left with the desire to be able to represent his country, after the rudeness of Qatar 2022.
“Everyone knows what it means to me to wear the Spain shirt. You will never lose hope as long as we are still active,” He commented on having been ruled out by Luis Enrique for the World Cup in Qatar.
After the World Cup, Spain had a change of DT, and Luis De La Fuente entered. This new coach opened the doors for Ramos: “Nobody has the door closed, the best will come. It will depend on the states of form in all cases. I’ll talk to Ramos, like with all the heavyweights,” he commented in December 2022, when he was already announced as technical director of La Roja.

Now in February 2023 Ramos issued a statement on his social networks announcing the retirement of the National Team. “The time has come to say goodbye to the National Team”, He begins to pray said statement that immediately went viral.
Ramos believes they withdrew it: “I think that this trajectory deserved to end due to a personal decision, or because my performance was not up to the National Team, not because of a matter of age and other reasons that without having heard them, I have felt,” he explains.

Sergio retired from La Roja with four titles at the national team level. He won the European Under-19 Championship in 2004, and with the senior team he won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and again a Euro in 2012.
