The Nicaraguan writer, Sergio Ramírez Mercado, received this Thursday, May 19, the title of doctor honorary cause from the National University of Costa Rica (UNA), for his contribution to Central American and universal culture through his literary work, and I dedicate it to the political prisoners of Nicaragua.
“I want to dedicate it to the political prisoners who unjustly and cruelly suffer in captivity in the jails of the dictatorship in Nicaragua. I ask all of you, Costa Ricans, not to forget them and to accompany the silent struggle they are waging for a dignified, just and democratic Nicaragua. I invite you not to forget that they represent the cause of freedom, so beloved in this country”, said the intellectual after receiving the highest distinction awarded by this alma mater.
Ramírez also offered a conference entitled “Literature, life and nature”, in which he questioned those who cling to power.
“The exercise of power comes from madness, interest and cynicism, and in each government there is the temptation to oppress, weakness in the face of flattery, the desire for fame, imposture. It puts the discourse of good government in the mouth of a madman”, reflected the author of the novel “Tongolele did not know how to dance”.
“We must all be united”
Ramírez recalled his exile in Costa Rica during the Somoza dictatorship and thanked this country for receiving those fleeing repression in Nicaragua, in addition to calling on Nicaraguans to remain united, regardless of the country in which they are.
The writer is in exile accused of alleged crimes fabricated by the Prosecutor’s Office controlled by the Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo regime, which issued an arrest and search warrant against him.
Next Monday, May 23, Ramírez will receive his doctorate honorary cause from the University of Costa Rica (UCR), for his career and contributions to social development, culture and Latin American literature.
