Sergio Micco’s defenses after his boisterous departure from the INDH: “Having regained my freedom of expression, I will proceed to use it with all the strength I have”

The former director of the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH), Sergio Micco, referred to his noisy departure from the institution last Monday, July 18.

“Having regained my freedom of expression, I will proceed to use it with all the force I have, following Lessing’s dicta: ‘Let each affirm his truth, and the Truth be reserved to God,'” he said.

“The State of Chile is not complying, to this day, with its duties to give itself the means to investigate, prosecute and punish human rights violations. For this reason, the Directorate of the INDH has said that we are closer to the impunity than truth and justice,” he added.

Along the same lines, he denounced that “until today no one has verified that in Chile the State organized and executed a massive attack on the civilian population, agreeing to impunity. There is no international human rights report that says otherwise, nor neither does the INDH”.

Likewise, he accused that “on November 3, 2019, I was forced to say that I did not believe that there were systematic violations, because I was falsely accused of having said the opposite and such a lie was spread in Chile and Europe.”

On the other hand, Micco revealed that “the INDH Council was pressured through 60-day strikes and a 180-day seizure to declare that there were political prisoners (prisoners of conscience) in Chile. I refused to sell my conscience and destroy the autonomy of the institute and I said that in Chile there were none”.

“To the question of those who tried to violate the autonomy of the INDH, I answer that they should simply search on social networks which political parties and social organizations supported the takeover of the INDH by an organization of former high school students,” he added.

On the pressures, “which included funas and death threats, they were denounced and condemned by the directives of the organizations of the Ombudsman’s Offices from all over the world.”

“These are my first seven truths, which I affirm humbly and with all the strength I have. It’s time to rest for today,” he said.
