The National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) revealed the presence of 1,126 guanaco specimens in the Arequipa region, according to the census carried out in December 2023.

The director of Sustainable Management of Wildlife Heritage (DGSPFS) of Serfor, Allan Flores Ramosnoted that the districts of Huambo (Caylloma) and Cahuacho (Caravelí) had the highest number of records.
The census was carried out over three days in 18 districts of six provinces in the Arequipa region. and had the support of the National Service of Natural Protected Areas of the State (SERNANP), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), the mining companies Zafranal and Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde and volunteer specialists.
This activity was intended to prepare, as a pilot, the strategies and work plan for the guanaco census to be carried out at the national levelas well as gathering information for basic studies that allow decisions to be made in favor of the protection and recovery of the species.
The guanaco is a wild South American camelid whose main threats it faces are: poaching, and the degradation and fragmentation of their habitatIt is distributed mainly along the western slopes of the Andes, from the department of La Libertad to Puno and Tacna. They live in social groups and are herbivores. Their fiber is finer than that of the alpaca and slightly less than that of the vicuña.
