A study carried out by Serasa Experian showed that 15.8% of rural producers in Brazilian agribusiness states were in default in March. The study was carried out in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Tocantins.
The Serasa Experian Rural Producer Default Study revealed that, compared to the previous study, carried out in June 2021, this number dropped by 0.1 percentage point, which can be considered stability. The number of defaulters among rural producers is much lower than that recorded in the adult population in general, which is around 40%.
“Agribusiness, one of the main engines of the economy in the country, continued to generate jobs and income in this period, also counting on favorable prices for the commercialization of its products. Producers’ earnings were maintained or even increased in some cases, making many able to pay the bills, mitigate risks and avoid default”, said Marcelo Pimenta, Head of Agribusiness at Serasa Experian.
According to the survey, default was higher among lower-income producers. Rural producers who earn more than R$ 10,000 monthly have the lowest negative percentage (12.2%). Those with income between R$ 2 thousand and R$ 4 thousand had the highest default rate: 19.3%.
