President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva opened the civic-military parade at 9:14 a.m. This year’s theme is Democracy and Independence. It’s Brazil on the Right Track. Several authorities were present.

This year, the event celebrating Independence Day was organized in three thematic axes: Brazil’s rotating presidency of the G20 and the Summit of Heads of State to be held in November in the city of Rio de Janeiro; support and efforts for the reconstruction of Rio Grande do Sul; and increased protection of the population, especially children, through vaccination campaigns and the expansion of primary health care services, with the resumption of the federal government’s Mais Médicos program.

The parade included 30 Olympic athletes who competed in the Paris Games between July and August, as well as the Brazilian vaccination mascot, Zé Gotinha. Athlete Caio Bonfim, who won an unprecedented silver medal for Brazil in race walking in France, was the group’s flag bearer.
