Suicide and survivors, the person who consumed the fact and its surroundings
On Thursday, July 17 was the National Day for the Fight Against Suicide, Awareness Day on the problem where it deepened in some fundamental aspects.
It is a scourge that directly and indirectly impacts throughout society therefore requires an inter -institutional approach.
It is estimated that for each person who suicide is around 100 survivors who are part of the closest environment.
“This is a sensitive, complex, multicausal issue that needs the look of the whole society getting involved in the approach to this problem” expressed the Psychologist Judith Lemos.
“That is why the call for departmental suicide prevention groups, which start from the National Suicide Prevention Commission, has to do with the community approach because the multiple actors are fundamental in understanding and approach” expanded the professional.
He said that prevention is a delicate, arduous and sensitive task that everyone’s understanding and commitment needs to be able to reverse the effects of a problem that not only emphasizes Uruguay but the world in general.
“That is why from the Uruguay psychologists coordinator we maintain permanent contact with international institutions that are the ones that provide tools or allow us to have a look of what happens in other latitudes of the world” held.
In Latin America suicide is a worrying issue with very high indices.
“In Cerro Largo we are in the third more or less, but the idea is not to stigmatize because when we say that this or that department is better or worse we can generate stigmatization and that is what we do not want” He highlighted the member of the Psychologists Coordinator.
“On the subject of suicide it is sometimes difficult to count because not only is that consummated suicide that we know that it took place, there are also the parasuicidal behaviors, traffic accidents, those accidents that one says what incredible how he could circulate at that speed, those boys who are making acrobatics endangering their physical integrity” said.
It is a problem that affects society as a whole. “For each suicide there are 100 survivors composed of the nearby core of that person, it is in an educational center or in a health center that occurs, the personnel that are linked. We have the cases in the police. There are a whole number of people who are around that person who committed suicide to which we call survivors to that traumatic situation that general suicide” Judith Lemos raised.
In relation to the health system and the response to this problem, he said that he should always aim to improve. “We are in the process of achieving it. We have to give more answer. That is why the articulation is important, that the society is a whole that works on this subject, not only the health services specifically, but also from the side of education, from the side of the transit, from the sport for the important one that in sport is in the prevention behaviors. Also art, music, fun, recreation, all issues that decrease stress.”
He recommended that people not stay so much in the confinement. “We are studying aspects that have to do with the use of screens, how they make the waiting or tolerance mechanism less and less because the times of now are the times of click, I look for it and I have it. That tolerance to frustration is decreasing and to the extent that that tolerance to frustration decreases and that a fictitious reality is lived make the real appear as something altered” The psychologist Judith Lemos argued.
