Cuban culture suffered a sensitive loss this Wednesday with the death in Havana of Gerardo Fulleda León.

Born in Santiago de Cuba in 1942the renowned creator graduated with a degree in History from the University of Havana and was part of the first class of the Dramaturgy Seminar of the National Council of Culture (1961-1964), where he received classes from teachers such as Luisa Josefina Hernández and Osvaldo Dragún.
As highlighted by the portal CubascenaFulleda León was founder and deputy director of El Puente editions and developed a extensive dramatic production.
Among his most recognized works are The defilers (1979), Placid —Teatro Estudio Award in 1981 and later made into a film by Sergio Giral—, Rwanda (1986)awarded the UNEAC Prize; The Darling of Enramada (1989); Chago of Guise (1990)Casa de las Americas Award; and Bitumen (1997).
Fulleda León, a life in the theater
As a theater director, Fulleda León also left a significant mark with montages like Take Me to the Ball (1972)by Ignacio Gutiérrez; Requiem for Yarini (1999)by Carlos Felipe; and False Alarm (2001)by Virgilio Piñera, among other titles.
In 1984 he published the volume Some colonial dramas and collaborated as a teacher at the Faculty of Theater Arts of the University of the Arts (ISA).
For several years He was general director of the Rita Montaner Theater Companyfrom where he promoted sustained artistic and cultural management work. His work consolidated the El Sótano room as an essential space for audiences who love performing arts.
In 2014 he received the National Theater Award. Furthermore, throughout his notable career he was awarded the Raúl Gómez García Medal, the Distinction for National Culture and the Alejo Carpentier Medal, among other recognitions.
Their Funeral services will be held this Thursday, February 19 between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Calzada y K Funeral Home.
Artists, theater groups and institutions such as the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) have lamented on the networks the death of Fulleda León, which occurred a few days after her 84th birthday, and have conveyed their condolences to her family and friends.
