MADRID, Spain.- The Republican senators for the State of Florida Marco Rubio and Rick Scott asked the Biden administration not to make concessions to the abusive and criminal Cuban regime during the “Dialogue on Law Enforcement” that during these days takes place in Havana between a US delegation and the island’s authorities.
Marco Rubio and Rick Scott urged that this dialogue be used to promote the political and economic freedoms of the Cuban people.
“Past experiences have shown that dialogues with authoritarian regimes, especially those that do not respect the rule of law, negatively affect the well-being and desire to live in freedom of the Cuban people,” the senators recalled at a letter sent to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, US Attorney General Merrick Garland, and US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
In the same way, they considered: “Only a policy towards Cuba that imposes democracy and the rule of law will serve as the best foreign policy tool for our national security.”
Among the issues that Rubio and Scott indicated should be prioritized during the talks are:
- Free and fair elections for the institutions of the government of Cuba.
- Freedom for all Cuban political prisoners and prisoners of conscience
- Withholding of Cuban property until the assets expropriated by the Cuban regime are returned to their rightful owners, both American and Cuban.
- Extradition of US citizens who have fled to Cuba for crimes committed on US soil, including those responsible for murdering police officers and Medicare fraud.
- Cease the use of mass migration to our shores as a political weapon.
- Stop sponsorship of foreign terrorist organizations operating in Colombia, Venezuela and other parts of Latin America.
According to reports from press agencies, among the issues discussed during these days between Havana and Washington are illegal migration, the repatriation of intercepted persons, human trafficking; drug trafficking and cooperation to deal with smuggling operations in the Florida Straits.
The first meeting of the “Law Enforcement Dialogue” took place in 2015, during the presidency of Barack Obama. Between that year and 2018, another three occurred.
