A group of Democratic and Republican senators in the United States presents a resolution to prevent a military offensive against Venezuela and in this way prevent President Donald Trump from carrying out a war action without the authorization of Congress, according to a Reuters report.
The resolution is promoted by Democrats Tim Kaine and Adam Schiff along with Republican Rand Paul, who ask to reaffirm the constitutional limits of executive power and stop Washington’s armed operations in the Caribbean under the pretext of combating drug trafficking.
Kaine recalled that Congress is the one that must approve the use of military force for a war and the president can only authorize it for short attacks.
In relation to the alleged authorization of covert operations by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Venezuela, he specified that Congress has not given the green light to this possibility, which was hinted at by the current White House administrator.
At least five attacks by US forces have been carried out in the Caribbean Sea, killing 27 people.
Venezuela took the case to the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) and requested a determination on the illegality of the US attacks, which include extrajudicial executions of civilians.
